Our goal is to be the No.1 career community for women!
Our wonderful guest, Romy Newman, back in show number 75 made this statement in November 2018. Bringing this show back for another airing was so important. Romy tells us,
“There has never been a successful and dominant community to help women advance in the workplace.”
Fairygodboss was established in 2015 while Romy was helping her former colleague to find a new job. She tells us how most review sites were “more broad and they weren’t addressing her concerns”. Romy took a unique approach – “instead of finding another job, I wondered if I could crowdsource this information from other women”.
Fast-forward to 2018 and Fairygodboss is helping shape corporate America’s policy as she tells us,
“We built the only existing crowdsource database of parental leave policy in the US” and we had Coca Cola and the New York Times tell us they used our data to change their parental leave policy.”
Women job seek differently to men
Romy illustrates just how differently women approach their job search compared to men.
“For men, it’s really about the numbers. They want to know the salary” and “women want to get a real visceral sense of what this experience is going to be like. That’s why video, storytelling and testimonials are even more important to women.”
She advises businesses need to be more proactive. They need to “put its most successful women on a stage” and say “here’s a woman that’s had a good experience” in terms of being part of that company.
Romy’s last piece of advice for recruiters is to
“Challenge the client to aim for 10,15 or 20% of the women on that team.”
If that wasn’t enough, below you’ll hear Romy talk about:
- The gender pay gap and salary reviews
- Survey results on sexual harassment in the workplace
- The ‘Bro-culture’ challenge
- Companies embracing employee work-life balance
- The importance of negative reviews and feedback
