Laughing hysterically is a great way to start any Friday
That’s how every conversation starts with our guest Susanna Frazier, Head of Strategic Sourcing at Universal Music Group, Founder of SourcersWhoCode, and HR tech advisor. Our show was no exception. From our favourite emoji to the story of how Susanna ended up in Thailand, it was a show catching up with old friends and drilling into some new definitions on the difference between recruiting and sourcing in today’s talent landscape.
As an engineering and business major, Susanna brings a different approach to sourcing. Her hackathon wins are a reflection of that. Her first sourcing hackathon opened her eyes.
“I was like, holy cow, there is so much I didn’t know how to do… because I never had to recruit or source under those circumstances, so that opened my eyes. I was like, I must learn everything. The next hackathon, I won.”
Obviously, her competitive nature never hurt her sourcing outcomes, either. “Sourcing is more a bounty hunter in terms of targeted searching for passive candidates and hard to find, niche fills,” says Susanna. In her world, recruiters handle more of the relationship with the hiring manager and internal phone screens. Meanwhile, she does the part she loves: discovery.
Digging Deep: Why Sourcing Matters
Susanna was a self taught sourcer coming from the world of recruiting. She realised the impact of knowing how to find the people in the first place. “I had a lot of sales training when I was a recruiter but I didn’t know how to find people effectively. It was all about hitting my numbers. I didn’t feel like that was the best way to manage my desk, so I self-educated on sourcing.” Her advice to sourcers looking to get an edge?
“Don’t get caught up in all of the tools. Find what works for you and apply it to your workflow. It’s all about what works in your space and applying that to you.”
If that wasn’t enough, below you’ll hear Susanna share more:
